From Mumbai til Sápmi: The Femfilm Program is Here

Femfilm Oslo invites you to a three-day festival of films & feminism at Vega Scene! We’ll be screening films from around the world, special events, panel talks, and guests. The program will be updated with English text soon – for now you can take a look at the calendar view of the festival on the Norwegian site here.

The official opening film of the first ever edition of Femfilm Oslo will be LADIES ONLY (India 2021), screening at Vega on Saturday April 23. This intimate documentary takes you on a train journey through Mumbai, on board a train carriage reserved for ladies only.

State Secretary Gry Haugsbakken will be present for the official opening of the festival – as will the director of the film, Rebana Liz John. The film recently won an award at the Berlinale and has not previously been screened in Norway.

Exclusive International Titles

Other exclusive titles include the absurd «woke» comedy BABYSITTER (Canada 2022) and Urkainian documentary THE EARTH IS BLUE AS AN ORANGE (Ukraine/Lithuania 2020), which looks at what role art can play for humans in difficult circumstances. Another special import is the lo-fi, in-depth cinematic documentary WOMEN ON BOTH SIDES OF THE CAMERA (UK/Iran 2021), examining the participation and portrayal of Iranian women in cinema.

Festival Director Helene Aalborg says that the festival team have worked intently to ensure a broad international program:

– Cinema is an international art form, and international perspectives are essential for feminism. As such it is important for us to be able to screen films from other parts of the world, while also maintaining a solid Nordic profile, says Aalborg.

Special Events

In addition to their program of feature films, Femfilm are also screening five different short film programs with films that have been submitted to the festival from around the world. The short films have been curated into five thematically based sections. More info in English to follow. On Sunday April 24 there will also be a live podcast in the downstairs Foyer of Vega Scene, this will be in Norwegian.

Two of the feature films being screened at the festival will be followed by panel talks. Norwegian #metoo documentary NAME OF THE GAME will be discussed by a panel consisting of political editor of Dagbladet, Marie Simonsen, former Centre Party politician Hilde Lengali, and Associate Professor at OsloMet, Anja Sletteland. After the screening of Nordic documentary THE SILENCE IN SÁPMI we will be talking with Marion Anne Rimpi from the film, as well as Aili Guttorm from Samisk Hus Oslo, and Johanna Myklebust from Mental Helse. The panel talks will be in Norwegian.
